Throughout the year we board many galgos (Spanish bred greyhounds) at Pep Plans kennels in Vic, Barcelona. These dogs are fully dependant on funding by GIN for their maintenance / veterinary care. Once Pep has carried out testing for Mediterranean diseases, treating if necessary, and sterilizations, arrangements can be made to home the galgos in mainland Europe.
Transportations are being arranged all the time for dogs to come to Pep’s and then to be taken by our contacts abroad to homes in Belgium, France, Switzerland, etc. For the latest news on any of the dogs shown below please email us on info@greyhoundsinneed.co.uk Thank you.

We have been so pleased that our co-operation with Elisa and Chiara of the Adopt Centre Italy has continued. As many of you will remember we first made contact following the closure of the Rome track approximately 4 years ago. Once all the greyhounds were rehomed Elisa asked how they could help the galgos in Spain
We work closely with Balbino, Maria and Evagrio at the Arca de Noe refuge in Albacete and try to help as many galgos as we can who have been rescued by them. Balbino prepares photographs and details of each dog which allows Elisa and her group to publicise them on their website in order to find homes. We are happy to fund their veterinary treatment in Albacete (testing for Mediterranean diseases, sterilisations etc.) and help where possible by funding some transportation costs. Once homes have been found in Italy the transportation is organised. Balbino and his helpers often drive the journey from Albacete to Nice where Elisa and her helpers collect the dogs and continue their journey.
We are fortunate now to have Monica, here in the UK, who is helping us with communications.

We have supported the work of Nuria Blanco of Amigos de los galgos for some years now. Nuria works very hard for the galgos and has homed many in France over the years which is a great achievement.
Nuria helps the galgos in Madrid where she lives and those in neighbouring areas. She prepares photographs and details of each dog which go on her website and this helps her and her contacts in France to find homes. We are happy to help with some of her dogs with some funding for their veterinary treatment (testing for Mediterranean diseases, sterilisations etc.) Once homes have been found Nuria arranges their transportation.

Lucy was rescued 28th May 2008 from a busy Motorway in Southern Spain. A few minutes more and she could easily have been killed! A brave passing motorist risked stopping and
crossing the motorway to rescue her. She was no trouble to rescue, and
immediately began to wag her tail before freely jumping into the boot of the car
as if to say "yipppee!!!!! Here is my new Dad". Lucy can best be described as very affectionate. She absolutely loves cuddles and strokes. Lucy will make someone a perfect four-legged friend. Although off the lead she does tend to go off for a few minutes at a time before returning, like all greyhounds her recall when off the lead is not particularly good. She is housetrained and travels perfectly in the car. Her other favourite pastime is sleeping (lots
of it) She spends most of her waking hours wagging her tail. She also has learnt
that good things happen when she sits at your feet and she now comes over to us
a lot and sits perfectly at your feet! She is very good on the lead, and she sits for
her food and to have her lead put on. She very seldom barks and sits quietly for
hours looking out across the road silently. She is well mannered and does not try to steal your own food. We bathed her recently and she enjoyed that also. Lucy will make someone a wonderful adoring Friend. If you are considering a Galgo rescue from Spain, please, consider Lucy ...She is an absolute gem and she is gorgeous to look at as well! |

Oscar
was found cooling himself in the shade of a tollbooth on the AP7 motorway in
Southern Spain. A call from them resulted in our rescue. He has been living
rough for a while and has a few old scars towards his back end; these give this
gentle boy some character. His coat generally now is glossy, and he will look
handsome again very soon. He is
around 5 years old, and during the time on his own, has lost a couple of claws,
including one dewclaw. He loves to snuggle up close to you on the settee for you to
stoke his neck. Oscar is
best described as loyal, and friendly. He absolutely loves to be with you. We
believe that he may have loved his previous owner, but judging by the marks on
him it may be possible he was abused, however the way he is with all the people
we meet both in and out of the house on our walks would suggest that he does not
have any problem with men or woman or other dogs. Extremely sociable and remains quiet and submissive with all new dogs he meets, this means that all new dogs he meets he gets on with very well. Indeed
within ten minutes of meeting our three he was getting along fine with all of
them. He has
been with us now for about a month. During this time not once has he had an
accident in the house! He was reluctant to come inside at first, clearly
believing that the inside was only for the pack leader not the follower! Loves to
have a bath and enjoys being clean, and groomed.
After a while he ventured inside the house, and has been a joy to have in
the house. He
character is without flaw, he never asks for anything except a touch of you hand
as he wags his tail when you rise in the morning. He is
fine in the car never sick, and travels quietly in the back, at the vet he
behaves perfectly and routine checks are fine, although he did complain the
evening he was castrated! He sits
perfectly for his food, and like all our foster dogs he knows that good things
happen only when he is calm ands submissive. He never disturbs you when you are
eating. He walks
perfectly on the lead, and when off the lead will walk perfectly by your side
(in the countryside) he will always know where you are, he will be watching you
closely he does not want to lose a master who treats him well. |
