A New Trustee for GIN
Last Tuesday, 19th August 2003, at a meeting of the Trustees, Martin Humphery was formally accepted as a trustee of Greyhounds in Need, increasing our current number to four.
Many of you will already have met Martin and Angela who have been hard working and generous supporters of GIN since learning about and fundraising for, our rescue of the greyhounds from Mallorca in early 1999. They adopted their galgo Harry who came to this country from Spain in June 2000.
They live in Hampstead, London, where several of you may know they have held fundraising functions for us both in their home and on the Heath, introducing us to yet more friends and supporters in that area.
Martin ‘s experience, before he retired 10 years ago, was in management in the motor trade, where he was Managing Director of the MAMOS Group where he gained experience in staff management, diplomacy and financial control which is hugely valuable in an organisation such as GIN which needs the tactful deployment of voluntary workers and the wise handling of donated funds.
In his retirement, Martin has involved himself deeply in local affairs and until recently, held the position of Chairman of The Heath and Hampstead Society, a charity with 2000 members involved with local conservation and amenity matters. He continues to work for the Society as Vice President.
With Angela, who has been deeply committed to animal welfare issues internationally all her life, he has travelled much over the world, learning, seeing, photographing and reporting first hand , on projects committed to ending the suffering of animals abroad.
We welcome Martin and thank him for offering to devote his time and skills to our work for the Greyhounds.

Mike and Abigail were married in Shropshire on August 16th and asked their guests, instead of presents, to donate to one of three charities. Abigail chose Greyhounds in Need as she feels very sympathetic to their cause when abandoned or abused. A total of £440 was donated to GIN!
Thank you both for the kind thought and many congratulations!

LOOKING FOR A SPECIAL GIFT THAT WILL BE TREASURED?
Unica came into my life in February 2002 having raced in Barcelona and been rescued by GIN. She is the love of my life. The nicest surprise I ever received was from a group of American friends who commissioned Esther Clair, a talented artist to do a graphite pencil portrait of Unica as a gift for my Retirement/60th Birthday.
Here is the portrait and the photo from which it was done – Pat Whipps

WHAT IS HEALING?
Jeanette Woods, a supporter in Youghal Co. Cork, is a Master of Reiki, an ancient form of healing transmitting energy from the healer who tunes into the patient who needs it. It is not essential for the patient to be present as healing can be given by thought energies from a distance. It has no side effects and is intended to complement, not replace the advice and treatment of your vet.
Further details and a request form from Jeanette can be obtained from GIN headquarters.
Jeanette offers this service for payment to GIN.
One session at £10 Block of 3 sessions at £20
Danger! Cocoa Mulch,
which is sold by Sainsbury’s, Homebase, Home Depot, Foreman’s Garden Supply and other garden supply stores, contains a lethal ingredient called “Theobromine”. It is lethal to dogs and cats. It smells like chocolate and it really attracts dogs. They will ingest this stuff and die. Several deaths already occurred in the last 2-3 weeks. Just a word of caution – check what you are using in your gardens and be aware of what your gardeners are using in your gardens. Theobromine is the ingredient that is used to make all chocolate – especially dark or baker’s chocolate – which is toxic to dogs. Cacao bean shells contain potentially toxic quantities of theobromine, a xanthine compound similar in effects to caffeine and theophylline. A dog that ingested a lethal quantity of garden mulch made from cacao bean shells developed severe convulsions and died 17 hours later. Analysis of the stomach contents and the ingested cacao bean shells revealed the presence of lethal amounts of theobromine.

Elisa Manna of the Greyhound Adoption Center, Italy, gave birth to Simone on 5th September 2003 in Modena, Italy!
We all say that Simone is God's Gift to Elisa for all her extreme hard work, energy, perseverance, courage, love and devotion she put into the enormously stressful task of resolving the fate of the 370 greyhounds stranded at Rome track in 2002.
Congratulations Elisa and Luca!
