October 2009 - News from the Bournemouth Shop……

Hello from sunny Bournemouth and thanks to all of you who have helped with our fundraising efforts so far this year….but we need more helpers!   It seems that volunteers like to work in a charity shop but are more hesitant to get out on the streets!   The public are very interested in our work with the greyhounds/galgos and very much enjoy meeting our dogs so please don’t be shy and offer your help with our collections. I will also be organising some in-store collections soon at Sainsbury’s, Asda, etc., which hopefully will appeal to some of you. Please ring me at the shop for further details.—01202 513000.

Peter Crawley together with several friends very kindly organised two more street collections in Ringwood and Fordingbridge in April/ May and raised more than £400. The Dorchester collection on 3rd June produced £258.53 even though we were very short of collectors… please could you help with the next one on Wednesday 28 October?

Our annual sponsored walk at Hengistbury Head was well supported again this year by both walkers and their four-legged friends and a  total of £959.28 was raised – only slightly down on last year which is a pleasant surprise in these   difficult times.    The event of the year must be our stall at Winton Carnival in June which was so successful we ran out of prizes for our fundraising favourite, The Mug Game. We raised £200 from this and another £217.37 from bric-a-brac and donations. (The nearby ice-cream stall took £1200 – what a great day!)

Over the last few months I have successfully homed several lurchers and an elderly greyhound – all went to wonderful homes. We are now looking for a   special home for Spray, an 18month old, male lurcher with only 3 legs.  Unfortunately he was knocked down by a car and the vet was unable to save his leg.  Please get in touch if you would like to offer Spray a loving home.

We are hoping soon to stock larger items of furniture in our shop but need a ‘man with a van’ to collect/deliver these items.  If you can help please let me know on 01202 513000 or e-mail me - greyhoundlady@waitrose.com

Finally, from 1 October the sponsorship scheme will be run from Head Office in Wraysbury. Penny and I have very much enjoyed running the scheme since its inception in the year 2000 and many thanks to all of you who have so kindly sponsored our dogs over the years.

May 2009 - News from the shop….Our shop continues to do well despite many charity shops expressing their concern over the lack of donations. We did go through a quiet patch for a couple of weeks when it snowed but now everyone is in the midst of Spring fever and clearing out their cupboards.

One of our supporters, Peter Crawley, kindly organised a Street Collection in Fordingbridge just before Christmas and together with three helpers and their dogs managed to raise £206.08. He was so thrilled he is organising another one.

We are also organising two more collections in Dorchester this year for 3rd June and 28th  October. If you can offer help with these please contact Esme on 01305 262320 ( Dorchester ) or me on 01202 513000. We are also having a fundraising stall at the Winton Carnival in Bournemouth on June 27th.  Last year this event was attended by thousands of people who enjoyed a fantastic day out. Why not pop along and support us?

Many thanks for all who gave donations for the dogs Christmas treats; the total was a heart-warming £899! This was split between the refuges in Spain , the quarantine dogs and the greyhounds in kennels in Cheshire and Wales.

Although generally there has been a marked increase in dogs for rehoming we have been very lucky in this area in finding good homes for several greyhounds and lurchers. My grateful thanks to Lin Dorey of Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue who has offered her help with this.

Have a good summer and hope to see you at the shop or one of our events.

Verwood Rotary Club

A big Thank you once again to Verwood Rotary Club for their kind donation of £100 to Greyhounds in Need. It really is very much appreciated, especially when there are so many charities and organizations around who are also very worthy causes. My husband and I were again invited along to receive the cheque, and it made you feel good to see how many people give their time and effort to raise the money and the variety of groups who benefit as a result of this. Our thanks must also go to Peter and Val Crawley for their continued interest and support.
