27 may 2008: see the write up of the Sponsored Walk at Hengistbury Head - now UPDATED!.
The
“Gin and Tonics” won another quiz night last week. The quiz was
organised by Lyn, Chair of the Friends of the Strays of Greece. I went
with volunteer Margaret, her son and my friend Sue. We were gobsmacked.
Halfway through we had only average marks and at the end our name was
not amongst the runners-up (the sound system was lousy and we thought we
had missed our name). Third was announced, then second – still no G
& T’s – then we were announced as the winners. We were shocked!
Can’t wait for the next one – that’s three we’ve won! Sue
Sunday
16th March - Walk at Burbush Hill.
As it turned out the weather was kind to us, the light rain pretty much
drying up as we set out. That could not be said for the ground water! In
one place a stream had almost washed out the path, but we struggled
through with a helping hand, but when we got to the far end of the route
and would have dropped down off the old railway embankment to circle
back, we could see our way was completely flooded out - even some ponies
were thinking twice about walking through. We turned around and walked
the whole way back along the old railway, so a little bit shorter, but
certainly drier! Two new couples turned up, one has a RGT bitch called
Rosie, and they are looking for a playmate for her, the other couple
have a nice whippet. Let's hope that April will be drier!
All the best, Keith.
17th
February
- We had a very good walk today from Appleslade car park, near
the Red Shoot Inn. The weather forecast had been good and it
was a lovely day. When we were gathering we had a couple turn up with 2
Great Danes, and a lady without a dog, that we welcomed as new walkers, and
they even made a donation, then as we were moving off the 2 with the Danes
realised that they had meant to join a different charity walk starting
from the Red Shoot, so they left us to try to catch up with the others, saying
we could keep the donation! The other lady decided to walk with us anyway, but
in conversation we realised that she would have been better to go along with
the others as she is not really a 'greyhound person' as she wants a small
dog (small flat), and it must be one with longer hair so she can brush it,
like her cats! Anyway,
we were over a dozen 2-legs and 9 hounds, and with all the extra donations we
collected £45!! Let's
hope this is the start of a good fund raising year!
All the best, Keith

Christmas treats …The response from so many of you to treat our rescued greyhounds and galgos at Christmas was wonderful. These kind donations have been shared amongst the greyhounds and galgos we are helping, both here and abroad and they have been much appreciated. Thanks to everyone especially Sue and Penny at the shop for organising this.

Here
you can see Keith, Mollie, GIN supporters and their dogs at the Burbush

Puttles Bridge Car Park,
23rd September 2007 - We have been having some problems with underpaid postage on letters and parcels sent to the shop since postal rates changed earlier this year. The excess we have to pay is considerable so please be careful when posting items to us making sure the correct postage has been paid so that your kind donations are received safely by us. Thank you, Sue
Steph who helps Sue at the shop kindly manned a stall for GIN at the Oakdale Community Fair, Poole on the 24th June. Total raised was £90.51
Shirley Sweet went along to the Caring Canines Garden Fete in Bournemouth on the 22nd July taking her lovely brindle greyhound Katie who caused a bit of excitement. They met a young lady who took a delight in taking lots of photos of Katie – the end result will be a wonderful mural which will be hung in the Greyhound Hotel in CorfeCastle. A good excuse for a pub lunch in the Purbecks?
Wendy Ford kindly organized a dog walk in Pimperne on the 22nd July and raised £240 which was shared between GIN and ILPH
A very successful street collection took place in Dorchester on the 6th June, raising £325.11 in 3½ hours ! Also £90.81 was raised by merchandise sales. Many thanks to Sue, Esme, Stephanie, Donna and Shirley and their dogs.
More helpers are always needed for these collections so if you can help please contact Sue on 01202 513000 or Esme on 01305 262320.

GIN Sponsored Walk - May 2007 - Hengistbury Head - Once again Sue organized a very successful sponsored walk at Hengistbury Head. This walk has become an annual event down in Dorset and seems to get more popular each year. The weather was lovely and a few of the dogs decided to get their paws wet ! as you can see from the photographs taken by Amanda and Clive, http://www.cliveandamanda.co.uk/ginwalkmay07/index.html

Many thanks to good friends of GIN, Barbara and Robert Saywell for selling used books to raise funds for Greyhounds in Need at their electrical shop (Keyworth Electrical). Here they are pictured with Tom, who is about to go in to choose his next book—he prefers something with a little adventure in it as he is quite a mischievous little chap ! A lot of the books are re-sold many times over as customers bring them back for re-cycling. They did have two greyhounds themselves but now only have one after losing Dolly to bone cancer. So far they have raised over £1,000 –well done, keep up the good work, it’s really appreciated by everyone at GIN. What a very good idea it was to incorporate this within their shop—is there anyone else out there with a shop/other type of business where they could do the same? All you need is a small bookcase or similar and you too could be helping to raise more funds for GIN.

Thank you to Mark and his three helpers—Blue, Danny and Freddie—all good friends of GIN who raise a lot of money for us during the car boot sale season. Mark collects lots of different items including books and videos to sell as well as having a collecting tin on his stall. Mark has been doing very well and enjoys meeting people and spreading the good word about greyhounds and what super pets they make. His own three dogs are great examples of how laid back greyhounds can be and they go with him to all his car boot sales, wandering around meeting and greeting his customers. Our thanks go to Mark—and, of course, Blue, Danny & Freddie ! - for all the effort they put into raising funds for GIN.
We
had another successful year in 2006 and the shop is starting to
flourish again now after a quiet February, as in most years.
My
thanks to everyone who has sent in donations of stamps; it is now becoming
increasingly impossible to thank you all individually so please could you
accept this as our “thank you” for the future.

Mollie who have also been helping with the social dog walks. Aileen who
supplies us with all the postage for our sponsorship scheme. John, who
